In geometry, a quadrilateral is a polygon with four sides, four vertices, and four angles. The sum of the interior angles of any quadrilaterals is always 360 degrees. A quadrilateral has two diagonals, which are line segments joining opposite vertices. The term “quadrilateral” is derived from two Latin roots; “quadri” meaning “four”, and “latus”, meaning “side.” So, the word literally means “four sides.” Quadrilateral is also called tetragon, derived from Greek word “tetra” meaning “four” and “gon” meaning “angle”. It is similarly called “quadrangle.”

Properties of square:

  3. Each of the angles measuring 90°.
  4. The two diagonals of the square are equal to each other.

Rectangle: A rectangle is a quadrilateral in which the opposite sides are parallel and equal to each other.

Properties of Rectangle:

  1. Opposite sides equal.
  2. Opposite sides parallel.
  3. Each of the angles measuring 90°.
  4. The diagonals of a rectangle are the same length.

Parallelogram: A parallelogram is a quadrilateral, whose opposite sides are parallel to each other.

Properties of Parallelogram:

  1. Opposite side equal.
  2. Opposite sides parallel.
  3. Opposite angles equal.
  4. The diagonals of a parallelogram are not equal in length.

Rhombus: A rhombus is a quadrilateral that has all its four sides equal in length.

Properties of Rhombus:

  4. The diagonals of a rhombus are not equal in length.

Trapezium: A trapezium is a quadrilateral with one pair of opposite sides are parallel.

Properties of Trapezium:

  2. Sum of all the four angles of the trapezium is equal to 360°.

Isosceles Trapezium : A isosceles trapezium is a quadrilateral whose one pair of opposite sides are parallel.

Properties of Isosceles Trapezium:

  1. One pair of opposite sides parallel.
  2. The other pair of opposite sides equal.
  3. Angles opposite to equal sides equal.

Kite: A kite is a quadrilateral that has 2 pairs of adjacent sides are equal.

Properties of Kite:

  1. The two diagonals of a kite bisect each other at 90 degrees.
  2. The angles opposite to the main diagonal are equal.

  1. Concave Quadrilaterals.
  2. Convex Quadrilaterals.
  3. Intersecting Quadrilaterals, and last but not least “Cyclic Quadrilateral.”

Perimeter of Quadrilateral Formulas:

  1. Perimeter of Rectangle =2(Length+ Breadth)
  2. Perimeter of Square= 4×Side
  3. Perimeter of Parallelogram = 2× sum of two adjacent sides.
  4. Perimeter of Rhombus= 4×side.
  5. Perimeter of Trapezium = Sum of all four sides.
  6. Perimeter of Kite = Sum of all four sides.

Area of Quadrilateral Formulas:

  1. Area of Rectangle = Length × Breadth
  2. Area of Square = Side × Side
  3. Area of Parallelogram = Base × Height
  4. Area of Rhombus = (Diagonal1 × Diagonal2) ÷2
  5. Area of Kite = (Diagonal1× Diagonal2 ) ÷2
  6. Area of Trapezium = ½×(Sum of its parallel sides)× Height

  1. Diagonal of Square = Side length × √2
  2. Diagonal of Rectangle = √(L2+B2), where L is the length and B is the Breadth of the Rectangle.
